GMO/MONSANTO VERSUS THE PLANET

ENJOYED IT? LIKE IT AND ROCK THE CLASS!

You want more?

  • Net Income of Monsanto on 2011 :  US$ 1.659 billion (source : Bloomberg)
  • In USA, estimation shows that around 70% of processed food is GMO and same percent of Americans are not aware about it. More numbers here
  • GMO coming to Europe is mostly found in the cereals which feed the live-stock. More here
  • GMO doesn't bring any solution to poor countries as they claim. It's actually pretty much the contrary.
First of all, i'm very happy to present this cartoon cause many people heard about GMO's and Monsanto without knowing exactly what's going on. I thought it would be great to talk about it since French proved the toxicity of GMOs lately and the news went viral worldwide. The laboratory gave GMO's corn to rats during two years which resulted in massive cancerigene tumors. The drawing with the plant of Miss Tic which turn into a monster is the symbolic of it. I hope this crash course helps to understand the real challenge but also actions we have to take against greedy food industry which destroy our health but also our planet. I think the first step is to try, if possible (not like in the USA), to check labels as much as it's possible.

Also, I concentrated on Monsanto because it's the biggest biocrop corporation but others exists as well (Pioneer). If you want to go further in your investigations, here are more informations :
  • Obviously,  the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which is supposed to protect the consumers is big time corrupted. This is how this mess started and Monsanto started to do his dirty business.
  • Why should you avoid GMO's?
  • Top 10 facts you should know about Monsanto. Well, the cartoon talks about all of it but you can find more details about each problems.
  • Issues with farmers are really dramatic. Tons of articles exists but i'd like you to know about the situation in India for instance. But good news at least, India just decided to approve GMO labelling tag.
  •  Monsanto is a very powerful corporation which spent 10 million dollars in lobbying every year. You can read here about how they spent 4 millions dollars to defeart California GMO labelling initiative.
  • The reaction of Monsanto on their website
  • Agent Orange was a herbicide used in the Vietnam War. Now over three decades later, Monsanto is fighting claims to compensate Veterans and families effected by the toxin they made and distributed. Monsanto is still denying that Agent Orange (now banned for it’s high levels of toxicity) was the cause. Monsanto have even fabricated false research results stating that the only harmful reaction from Agent Orange was a slight skin rash. Although convicted for the crime they still refuse to pay medical compensation.
  •  Aspartame is a nightmare for your health, if you feel concerned about it of course. Start to ban everything which starts with LIGHT if you want to avoid aspartame.
  • Russia just suspended imports and use of GMO corn
  • I will highly recommend you to watch the documentary of the French reporter Marie-Monique Robin, The World According to Monsanto. The film is based on Robin's three-year long investigation into the corporate practices around the world of the United States agricultural giant. Excellent investigation.

Friends,
I just created a petition: Monsanto: Stop the use of deadly GMOs, because I care deeply about this very important issue - Because the future of the Human Race hangs in the balance. GMOs kill human liver & kidney cells and cause cancer. See the recent French study. Meanwhile, our White House keeps stuffing the FDA with ex Monsanto cronies. GMOs are deadly and must be stopped for the future of our children!
Genetically Modified Foods Cause Tumors, Says French Study:
A new study out of France concludes that a diet of genetically modified corn, specifically Monsanto's Roundup-resistant corn, gave rats who ate it a series of tumors, as well as trouble with their livers and kidneys.
"During the two-year study, the scientists found that up to 50% of the male rats and 70% of females that ate genetically modified corn...died prematurely. That compared to a 30% (male) and 20% (female) mortality rate among control rats that ate conventional corn without Roundup."
The authors of the study also reported that rates of liver problems were 2.5 to 5 times higher in animals who ate genetically modified food.
Russia halts imports of GMO corn after cancer study: Scientists will review French findings that Monsanto's product causes tumors.
Russia has suspended imports of Monsanto’s genetically-modified corn in light of a French study which linked the crops to cancer.
Agence France-Presse reports:
Russia’s consumer-rights regulator Rospotrebnadzor asked scientists at the country’s Institute of Nutrition to review the study. The watchdog has also contacted to European Commission’s Directorate General for Health & Consumers to explain the EU’s position on GM corn.
As Salon noted last week, the study found that rats fed Monsanto’s GMO corn, or exposed to its popular herbicide, developed tumors and organ damage, often dying younger than control group rats.
As Russia’s move illustrates, the study has fueled long-held concerns over GMO crops. A spokesperson from Monsanto announced that business would not be greatly hurt by the Russian suspension, as the country imports only a small amount of grain from the U.S.. However, the multinational corporation might feel a sting if more nations follow in Russia’s wake. France has announced it will uphold a ban on GMO crops, while activists and farmers in California and elsewhere in the U.S. are pushing for GMO foods to be labeled in stores and for the government to further investigate the health impact of Monsanto’s products.

It'll just take a minute!

Once you're done, please ask your friends to sign the petition as well. Grassroots movements succeed because people like you are willing to spread the word!
Good Health!

Thanks for your nice write up and cartoon...it is much better than hundred pages of article...!!

But I am still bit confused..can somebody illuminate me with the answers. That will help me in deciding my point of view. I have an open mind:

1. I understand GMO is going against nature or manipulating nature. Does it necessarily mean bad ? Aren't history of human being full of manipulating nature to our own advantage (e.g. stem cell, using nano technology to create new metals etc)

2. If GMO is bad, then are average Americans dying early these days or is it the other way round or they are living more because of expensive treatment / advancement of medical science ?

3.We also know many medical trials on mouse/ guinea-pig even if they are successful are failure on human beings

Thanks for your attention. I will be really glad to know these answers...which i always had in my mind, but did not know whom to ask !?

First, thanks for a great piece of education in the form of fun graphic art. To address the comment by sourabh: it is because the company has been secretive, bribing officials, patenting life forms, fighting the GMO label, etc. I'm pretty certain that if an invention (drug, machine, process) was beneficial and harmless, their books would be open. Since the company has fought so hard for maintaining secrecy, and has bypassed the will of the people using corruption, we have objections. Sure, some GMO may actually benefit people, but not enough study has been done and once these life forms get loose in the environment, catastrophe can ensue.

Dear sourabh - what I understand from the film: Genetic Roulette is that 1) they are manipulating genes between plants that otherwise would never exist in nature. So long term effects of doing this is uncertain. 2) Studies have shown that rates of diseases like arthritis, diabetes, GI tract illnesses have risen significantly since the introduction of GMO ingredients in the 1990's. 3) This is a good point. But the fact here is that GMO's are being "tested" on humans every day because most are consuming them in the foods we eat, so in actuality a worldwide clinical trial is happening without us really knowing it. It's really up to the people who strongly protest GMO's and who are able to study it from afar for many years that will tell us in the end if it's bad for us. But the main point too is that GMO products use pesticides...and aren't pesticides bad for us anyway? Hope this helped.

Anyone receiving information of a scientific nature from a cartoon has a cartoon for a brain

OMG ! A PRO-GMO ! ;p Science is AMAZING, there is no offence to draw cartoon about it and let people understand it on a funny (but still serious and accurate) WAY. But there is offence to tell the people who like my cartoons that their brain is not as you wish. Keep cool !

Mela you go girl. You are doing a wonderful job with your cartoons. The Pro GMO'ers are just angry that their lies are getting pointed out & told! More people refuse to be poisoned by Monsanto any more!!! I want an all out ban on not only GMO's but Monsanto & all of their poisons! Time to END BAD SCIENCE & only promote the good science.

My country (Hungary) is GMO free still. THere is not a single parcel where farmers grow GMO fruits and vegetables. But american GMO-consultants approaching our decision-makers on regular basis to make them allow growing GMO corn. I will protest that it will never happen.

As far as I know, Serbia is free of GMO as well, and there have also been rumors about Americans trying to grow GMO soy here. Hope it won't happen!

Howdy,
Just to comment on aspratame -
I think that the claim of harmfulness of aspartame is based on this article - http://journals.lww.com/jneuropath/Abstract/1996/11000/Increasing_Brain_Tumor_Rates__Is_There_a_Link_to.2.aspx
However, following that publication there has been a lot of research looking at aspartame that failed to support the original claim. For instance, these two publication by doing an epidemiological study on a huge number of people conclude did not find correlation between aspartame and cancer:
http://aacrmeetingabstracts.org/cgi/content/abstract/2006/1/944-b

http://annonc.oxfordjournals.org/content/18/1/40.short

I think that aspartame being harmful could be as true as MMR vaccine causing autism (false!)

Also beware of an article that claims a 'temporal' association - the aspartame article claims: ' Evidence potentially implicating aspartame includes an early animal study revealing an exceedingly high incidence of brain tumors in aspartame-fed rats compared to no brain tumors in concurrent controls, the recent finding that the aspartame molecule has mutagenic potential, and the close temporal association (aspartame was introduced into US food and beverage markets several years prior to the sharp increase in brain tumor incidence and malignancy)'. 'Temporal association' DOES NOT prove causality (that sth is caused by X because X appeared at the same time). For instance, if Bill Clinton was elected president at the same time when aspartame was introduced could we blame Clinton's presidency for 'brain tumours'? (or emergence of computer games or walkmans or 90's dance music). So which one is causing this cancers? They all emerged at the same time.

Thanks,
Lukasz
