QUESTION OF THE WEEK-END

What was Facebook originally called?

Facebook was briefly called FACEMASH when Mark Zuckerberg created the social site with his classmates in 2003. In February 2004, thefacebook.com was launched, but the 'the' was eventually dropped.
TOO BAD, FACEMASH COULD HAVE BEEN FUN !!!!

And yes, the shotgun to kill flies really exist !! HERE !

QUESTION OF THE DAY

WHO SAID :
"I'm not a drinker — my body will not tolerate spirits. I had two Martinis on New Year's Eve and I tried to hijack an elevator and fly it to Cuba"

Yes, he really said that too.

COUCHSURFERS REVOLT

What is couchsurfing? One of one my cartoon about it here. Couchsurfing is a real-life social network for travellers based on hospitality. So basically, users surf couch of perfect strangers. Since launching in 2003, Couchsurfing racked up more than 3 million users who helped each other travel, without ever pushing too hard or cashing in. It was a community effort, and the company’s non-profit status undoubtedly helped it project the image that it was part of a hands-around-the-world affair.

But earlier this week, even though it started in 2011, CouchSurfing announced a string of major changes. It turned itself into a for-profit corporation, raised $7.6 million in venture funding from Benchmark and Omidyar Network, and announced plans to start “aggressively hiring.” And that’s got some users spooked.

CRAZY BY NATURE

ENJOYED OUR CRAZY NATURE? LIKE IT AND ROCK THE CLASS! YEAH !

The story of Paricutin's volcano is incredible ! I can't imagine the faces of the peasants as the volcano was growing in their field. You can read more about it here and an other link here ! Of course, you can visit the volcanoe these days and it's a highlight of the region.
  • Ball Lightning is really awesome nature's oddee but it's still a mystery, you can read more here. The fact that this phenomenon is rare, happens fast and without the eye of experts make it a little bit mysterious. Pictures over here !You can as well check this short video and many can be found on YT! So far, it seems that scientists could reproduce the effect in laboratory these days but are still not sure how it occurs. Some researchers lately even claim that it could be a brain illusion ! Article right here, right now!
  • True story ! PLASTIC SUCKS!  28.000 rubber duckies fell off a cargo and are still travellin the world these day. Positive point, one oceanographer who models ocean current and all this crazy stuff decided to follow them ! They are officially call among the Friendly Floatees !
  • Bioluminescence is really awesOoooOOome stuff and i had the chance to see it many times at sea while sailing ! and swiim with it ! To get your own idea, check this out ! You can also see it on the beach, but usually the light occurs as the water is moving ! Check this out, even this one ! But i also enjoyed it very much in New-Zealand and other places. Just swim at night or use a dinghi and you will have so much fun. As well, a lot of creature, as i mentionned, produce light (mushrooms, fishs and more). You can check sea animals with bioluminescence right here. I've seen gloaming worms in forest at night, it was U-N-B-E-L-I-E-V-A-B-L-E (though, i don't like too much walking in the forest during the night!)
  • Everything about the green flash here and pictures over here ! I found this page which collected legends about it as well, pretty fun.
  • Moonbow is an awesome phenomenon that i had the chance to see several times when i used to live in Hawai. It seems that you can only see in few places in the world, especially in U.S.A. Thanks to Justin Sullivan for his awesome pic (website right here)
  • Yes, this dude is twitting from space as i mentionned in a previous cartoon ! Thanks Andre !
  • Mmm yeah, wi-fi on your ass is a reality ! Hahaha

THE THEORY OF RELATIVITY FOR DUMMIES

The Theory of Relativity explained for dummies with cartoons ! Follow the class !!

In between, i really saw that

So general relativity describes how any massive object, such as the Sun, produces gravity by bending space and time around it. Everything in that space is also bent: even rays of light, and these get deflected. Light doesn't always travel in straight lines as i showed you before. GENIUS !!!!!

Waaa waaaa waaa ! I know it's a crazy theory but it's SO brillant ! Einstein is definitely a genius. I had to try to explain to you! I hope i've been clear and i hope any fan of star wars or scientists are gonna kick me ;p
While drawing this cartoon, i really realised why many scientists are also somehow artists. I think to have such an idea, as Einstein did with his Theory of Relativity, you don't only need the 'technical' brain. You probably need first the understanding and the sensitivity of the world around you. Anyway, lets get back to earth.
  • Usain Bolt really dilated the time ! YEAHHH! A video right here
  • Neutrino fiasco ! Some scientists questioned this year Einstein's theory, which agitated everyone with +10 years studies in Science. A part of his theory was that some particules can travel faster than light so would prove Einstein wrong in the rest of his theory. Article here. But we don't know anything travelling faster than light in the universe so THEY were proven to be wrong. You can read here and here
  • How a scientist, Arthur Eddington, demonstrated that Einstein was right about his Theory of Relativity during the eclipse of 1919? Everything right here! Very nice page.
  • The history of the speed of the light for dummies ! Actually, measures started way before the two scientists i mentionned, Michelson and Morley, but their point there was the constancy of the light. Actually,  the extent to which the null result of the Michelson–Morley experiment influenced Einstein, is disputed. But in any case, the null result of the Michelson–Morley experiment helped the notion of the constancy of the speed of light gain widespread and rapid acceptance.
  • Of course with spacetime curvature, Einstein furthered our understanding of gravity, but the basic non-relativistic principles of gravity, enough to understand why the planets do not move on straight lines, were found very much earlier by people like Kepler
  • Stephen Hawking, is a very famous astrophicist who wrote a scientific bestseller called "A brief history of Time'. If you are interested in astrophysic and all this crazy stuff, even if you don't know a single drop in physic, its a good book to start.
  •  And when you hear about blackhole, here is the stuff. The theory is when the life of the star ends, it falls in his own gravitationnal hole (the spacetime curvation), as you saw on my drawing. And this is what we call blackhole ! After, i invite you read more cause im not Stephen Hawking
And about this famous sentence said to be quoted by Einstein :
'What is relativity? well, if you sit beside a beautiful girl for one hour, it feels like a second. But if you burn yourself a second, feels like an hour"
Never found a serious source for it ! But sounds right to me :)

Yeah yeah! i'm gonna do like in the movie now !!!! i dreamt about this moment for so loooOOooOong! ;p
Special thanks to my new phycisits friends in the International Tic Lab reviewing my cartoons at the end (with excellent comments), and encourage me to keep this insane crazy Science class :
Laura (Australia), Simon (England) and Richard (Germany).
And also, big thumbs up to my personnal english ass-kicker, Sam!
So if something is wrong, it's because of me !!!
